Rural Household Food Consumption in Bengkulu, Indonesia: Estimating a Demand System Based on SUSENAS Microdata

The paper aims to estimate the food demand of rural households in Bengkulu Province, Indonesia, using Quadratic Almost Ideal Demand System (QUAIDS) and microdata from SUSENAS. We aggregate into five groups: staple food, animal vegetables & fruits, prepared other food. results show that for is most sensitive expenditure, whereas expenditure-inelastic. Staple are substitutes each other. On hand, complement Other easiest be substituted, difficult substituted. demographic variables, as well prices expenditures, impact household demand. For example, family size increases, while fruits decreases. number children under years old has a positive on but negative farmer have higher need than non-agricultural households. Due being unmarried, divorced or bereaved, single lower mainly imply price stabilization policy should emphasize especially beef poultry, without increasing prices.
